"Are the cans that you use for your products Bisphenol A (BPA) free?"

Yes our cans are 100% BPA free.

"Does farmed salmon help to conserve threatened or endangered wild salmon stocks?"

Rather than conserve wild salmon numbers, fish farms are actually starting to threaten the livelihood of the natural wild stocks. Farmed salmon pose a threat to wild stocks by passing parasites and diseases through netcages. Farmed salmon can escape their nets and disrupt the spawning rituals of wild salmon species. Feed not eaten by farmed salmon is left to sit on the ocean floor to rot, further polluting our oceans.

"Does Raincoast provide information on their labels about where and how their fish was caught?"

Raincoast is committed to providing customers with clear and complete labelling. Our products are labelled with species, common name, catch area catch method and stock.

"Does RainCoast Trading have a Product Procurement Policy Statement?"

Yes, please download a link of our Policy Statement here.

"How is Raincoast Trading albacore tuna caught?"

We currently source our albacore from the British Columbia / US West Coast troll and pole albacore fishery. The fishery is Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified and considered "BEST CHOICE" by numerous organizations including the Ocean Wise , SeaChoice, Seafood Watch.

"What are the cooking procedures for your tuna?"

All Raincoast Trading Albacore Tuna is kept frozen during preparation for canning and cooked only once to preserve the natural oils and flavour. Other seafood providers cook their tuna twice - once before canning and then again during the canning process and then add oil or water to keep the tuna moist. We believe the double-cooking process is inferior and decreases both the flavour and nutrition value of the final product.

"What is Ocean Wise™?"

Ocean Wise™ is a Vancouver Aquarium™ conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise™ launched in 2005 with restaurants and markets to ensure that they were armed with the latest scientific information to make ocean-friendly buying decisions. Participating restaurants identified Ocean Wise™ choices on their menus, making it easier for diners to make environmentally friendly seafood choices. In 2009, Ocean Wise™ expanded its successful program to include suppliers, retailers and producers. Raincoast Trading is proud to be Canada’s first, founding producer partner endorsed by Ocean Wise™. Look for the Ocean Wise™ logo on our products at your nearest grocer.

Several criteria must be met to qualify for Ocean Wise™ status:
• The fish caught must be abundant and resilient to fishing pressures
• Well managed with a comprehensive management plan based on current research
• Harvested using methods that minimize bycatch and non-targeted/endangered species
• Harvested in ways that limit damage to marine or aquatic habitats and negative interactions with other species

"What is Raincoasts position on marine reserves?"

Raincoast supports the creation of marine reserves to help recover and safeguard marine life. Raincoast is committed to avoid sourcing its fish from proposed or existing marine reserve areas, and to take a leadership role in advocating for their creation. Raincoast supports the full protection of the Pacific Commons of the Western and Central Pacific Ocean to help improve the health of important tuna stocks and species impacted by tuna fisheries.

"Where does your fish come from and how is the info documented?"

As part of our ongoing commitment to quality and sustainability, we have designed a system to track the fish from can to boat. Production codes on the bottom of Raincoast cans are designed to give an expiry date, and we also use them to trace the origin of the fish. With this code we can identify the vessel, captain, name, vessel flag, harvest method, area of capture and trip dates.

"Where is Raincoast Trading salmon caught?"

Raincoast Trading catches salmon in the cold pristine ocean waters of the Pacific Northwest. To ensure the future salmon stocks, we catch our salmon with care and attention using species-specific, selective harvesting methods.

Raincoast Trading Albacore Tuna are caught 50 miles off the Washington, Oregon and British Columbia coastlines in the Pacific Northwest region.
